To help make an accurate diagnosis and to help you understand the nature of your presentation, you will probably be sent for an MRI Scan. An MRI scan is a very useful tool and imaging modality which is extremely sensitive and specific to identify pathology.
However, requesting an MRI Scan may not answer the questions that needs to be answered as very specific sequences and imaging location are required. The MRI Scan requested by your General Practitioner may not include the relevant or required imaging sequences, required to identify and visualise your problem.
It is often extremely difficult in arranging scans prior to seeing patients for these reasons as specific, targeted MRI Scans need to be requested often determined by the clinical history and examination at the initial assessment. It is not unusual for patients to require a further MRI Scan once a consultation has been undertaken.
