MRI Imaging
Advanced Diagnostic Scanning
Specialised MRI imaging techniques tailored to your specific condition, ensuring accurate diagnosis through targeted scanning sequences and expert interpretation.

MRI Scanning
Diagnostic Tool
An MRI scan is a very useful tool and imaging modality which is extremely sensitive and specific to identify pathology.
Specific Sequences
Very specific sequences and imaging locations are required to answer the clinical questions and identify your problem accurately.
Targeted Approach
Specific, targeted MRI scans are often determined by clinical history and examination at the initial assessment.
Understanding MRI Requirements
To help make an accurate diagnosis and to help you understand the nature of your presentation, you will probably be sent for an MRI Scan. An MRI scan is a very useful tool and imaging modality which is extremely sensitive and specific to identify pathology.
However, requesting an MRI Scan may not answer the questions that needs to be answered as very specific sequences and imaging location are required. The MRI Scan requested by your General Practitioner may not include the relevant or required imaging sequences, required to identify and visualise your problem.
It is often extremely difficult in arranging scans prior to seeing patients for these reasons as specific, targeted MRI Scans need to be requested often determined by the clinical history and examination at the initial assessment. It is not unusual for patients to require a further MRI Scan once a consultation has been undertaken.
Key Considerations
- • Sensitive pathology detection
- • Specific sequences required
- • Targeted imaging locations
- • Clinical history dependent
- • Post-consultation refinement
Specialised Imaging for Different Patient Groups
Adolescent Back Pain
This is particularly evident in adolescent back pain patients, who require a specific type of MRI Scan as their pathology and location of problem will not be visualised if a standard degenerative adult MRI Scan is applied to their lumbar spine.
Adolescent spinal conditions often require specialised imaging sequences that differ significantly from standard adult protocols to identify unique pathology patterns.
Adult Degenerative Conditions
Standard adult MRI protocols are designed to identify degenerative changes, disc pathology, and age-related spinal conditions that commonly affect the adult population.
However, even within adult imaging, specific sequences may be required based on suspected pathology, symptom presentation, and clinical examination findings.
Why Timing Matters
The timing of MRI scanning is crucial for optimal diagnostic accuracy. Pre-consultation scans may miss critical pathology if the wrong sequences are used, while post-consultation targeted scanning ensures that the specific clinical questions raised during examination are properly addressed.
This approach, while sometimes requiring additional scanning, ultimately leads to more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatment planning tailored to your specific condition.
The Imaging Process
Step 1: Initial Assessment
- • Comprehensive clinical history
- • Detailed physical examination
- • Symptom pattern analysis
- • Preliminary diagnosis formation
Step 2: Targeted Imaging
- • Specific sequence selection
- • Appropriate imaging location
- • Age-appropriate protocols
- • Clinical question focused
Step 3: Expert Interpretation
- • Specialist review of images
- • Correlation with symptoms
- • Treatment planning
- • Patient education
